Back in July, Porsche decided to have their own little short film contest. They invited movie makers to submit their films and the top ten finalist would then borrow a 2012 Porsche 911 Turbo S and have only 48 hours to shoot the final movie. These ten movie was then made available for voting by us, the public, over at mydailymagic.com.

Netflix's only strategy is to persuade people to shift to digital streaming only. They first tried doing it by offering a lot of new and exciting things that was digital only (integration with XBOX, iPad, fancy personalization etc.) When that didn't work, they tried raising the price of DVDs and lowering the price of digital. And when that didn't work, they put the entire DVD business into a separate business unit-- generally making their DVD subscribes lives difficult.

Like all online studies, there seems to be some discrepancies in the data. For instance, they claim that "Only 21% of bloggers are full time bloggers," but then go on to say that, "Only 11% of bloggers are earning their primary income from blogging." How can 21% be full time bloggers if only 11% earn a living doing it?

Today, companies have access to all sorts of numbers (actually far to many), but in the end, they don't have a clue what to do with it. Experts who understand the digital playing field as well as mathematics and statistics are rare. I could sense a movement to "buy" experts like professors from universities to do this job as a kind of a side project--this could become a real new job format as well.

Another example. Before the iPhone, I could go down to my local phone shop and buy a Nokia mobile for 99 cents (+ a 2-year contract.) Then Apple came out with the iPhone which was 500 times more expensive ...but people didn't care. Sure they wanted it to be cheaper because they were used to much lower prices. But the price was not really the deciding factor.

Another thing to remember is that the primary reason why Amanda Hocking was able to sell millions of books, at 99 cents, was because she was one of the very first people to ever do it. When she launched those books, every other book costs $10-$25. We had a cash-strapped economy, and her books appealed the one group of people who have more money than anyone else--the teenagers.

Part of this problem will be solved when Google+ open up for brand pages. Then Darren (and the rest of us) can create brand profiles for Problogger, Digital Photography School, or FeelGooder. This way he can create the right of level focus and people can decide what channels they want to follow.

I just launched two new books on Baekdal Plus. Both books are a collection of Plus articles from the first six months. I have divided the content into two packages. One for media and brand people called "Understanding New Media" (152 pages / 28,000+ words). The other one is for media publishers called "The Future of Publishing" (209 pages / 32,000 words). Each book contains 15 Plus article + 5 more article that adds to the whole.

A simple example. Two months ago contacted a company about a problem I had and their community manager immediately responded in a very straightforward, useful and friendly way. I was very impressed by her. She was a perfect case for what it means to be community manager. She responded immediately. She was very helpful, very professional, and she followed up on me the next day.

There is an interesting trend in the world of analytics. Just like the big trend in social media is now "return of investment", the big trend in analytics is that we are beginning to question the value and accuracy of our metrics.

They even go on to claim, "The unprecedented examination revealed that pages that display Twitter share buttons or links were distributed to followers on average about seven times more often than pages that did not have similar sharing tools. This is a significant difference that could lead to exposure to millions of additional consumers for sites that took the modest step of just installing social sharing buttons."

Last week the internet was buzzing with articles about Steve Jobs leaving Apple. Google news alone lists more than 12,000 articles about it from the media. But there is one thing they all miss, which I believe is one the main reason Steve was able to turn Apple into what it is today.
